Medication Safety
Meeting the Highest Standards of Medication Safety
and Labeling Compliance

Overview
Codonics Safe Label System (SLS) offers an advanced solution to enhance medication safety by eliminating the risk of the top medication errors, particularly in the perioperative and procedural settings. With its ability to print full-color, TJC-compliant labels and seamless integration with anesthesia drug carts (ADCs), SLS equips healthcare teams with a powerful tool to improve patient safety while ensuring compliance with the latest industry standards.
Meets ISMP 2025 Guideline 4.3: Eliminate Handwritten Labels
Codonics Safe Label System (SLS) is designed to meet the 2025 ISMP Guideline 4.3, which calls for the elimination of handwritten labels in perioperative and procedural areas. On demand, SLS prints easy-to-read, full-color labels that comply with The Joint Commission (TJC) National Patient Safety Goal NPSG.03.04.01, meeting the strict standards for medication labeling and documentation. These labels include essential medication information, such as the drug name, concentration, diluent and dilution (if required), time and date of preparation, time and date of expiration, the preparer’s initials, any warnings about the drug and a barcode containing the NDC from the parenteral vial/ampoule. Additionally, SLS supports compliance with ISO 26825, ASTM 4774, and ASA guidelines, making it the preferred system for hospitals worldwide.

Safe Label System is the standard of care in over 16,000 operating rooms globally, installed in more than 1,000 of the world’s leading hospitals. This FDA Class II medical device ensures the highest standards of safety and accuracy in medication management and labeling compliance, whether in the operating room or other clinical environments.
Meet ISMP 2025 Guideline 4.4: Machine-Readable Codes on All Labels
In line with ISMP Guideline 4.4, Codonics Safe Label System includes a machine-readable code (e.g., barcode, RFID) on all syringe and infusion labels—ensuring that even practitioner-prepared medications are labeled and documented accurately. During preparation, SLS provides visual and audible feedback to instantly verify the drug-in-hand based on its National Drug Code (NDC) barcode. At administration, scanning the syringe label barcode provide a “triple” safety check before the medication ever reaches the patient. This combination of electronic checks and balances helps eliminate the top three medication errors in the operating room—vial swaps, syringe swaps, and mislabeling.
SLS delivers a safety net that reduces a clinician’s reliance on manual processes and helps prevent errors by offering a robust, integrated system for medication verification in a standardized workflow. With each scan, SLS generates a ready-to-apply, full-color, TJC-compliant label and integrates seamlessly with leading EHR/AIMS systems like Epic and Cerner at the point of administration.

Proven Impact on Medication Safety
Codonics Safe Label System has been utilized in over 70 million procedures and 281 million drug preparations. To date, SLS has helped prevent more than 2.1 million medication errors—contributing to safer healthcare environments and improved patient outcomes. By integrating safety checks into the medication preparation and administration process, Codonics provides clinicians with a “second set of eyes”, reducing human error and ensuring that the right drug is delivered.
