It Started With a Label.

Now complementary technologies support safer operating rooms

Medication safety in the operating room still breaks down at handoffs — during preparation, administration, and controlled substance waste.

Disconnected steps create gaps. Gaps create risk.

Complementary Technologies. One Workflow.
Codonics addresses critical gaps in the perioperative medication workflow
through complementary technologies designed to support clinicians at each stage of care.
Preparation → Administration → Controlled Substance Waste & Data for Reconciliation

One Workflow. Greater Visibility.

Codonics technologies support medication safety and controlled substance accountability in the operating room as part of existing clinical workflows.

Codonics Safe Label System (SLS) and Safe Waste System (SWS) are complementary technologies designed to supporting different stages of the perioperative medication workflow.

Together, they support the progression from:
Preparation → Administration → Waste & Data for Reconciliation

These complementary technologies support visibility, reduce manual steps, and improve accountability in one of the most complex environments in healthcare — the operating room.

  • Standardizes medication labeling with visual and audible verification at preparation
  • Eliminates handwritten syringe labels
  • Brings visibility to controlled substance waste and data for reconciliation
  • Supports pharmacy oversight with timely access to waste event data

Follow One Medication Through the OR

Every medication in the operating room has a story.

When complementary technologies work in conjunction, that story can be followed from preparation through administration and into controlled substance waste – with the data required for reconciliation captured along the way.

PREPARATION

It starts at preparation on the anesthesia cart, where medications are dispensed and scanned using SLS.

Integration between the cart* and system improves safety, supports inventory control, and helps reduce stock outs before they impact care.

Each medication is visually and audibly verified as it’s removed from the cart. At the same time, a machine-readable, full-color, TJC-compliant syringe label is printed, and the cart’s inventory is automatically decremented — without manual key presses. Once applied to the prepared syringe, the label becomes the digital thread that follows the medication throughout the case.

ADMINISTRATION

At administration, the syringe is waved past the SLS-WAVE scanner on the way to the port, providing an additional safety check that helps reduce syringe swap risk.

Documentation into Epic or Cerner is electronic, ‘hands-free’, and captured at the moment of administration — recording the exact NDC, improving charge capture accuracy, and supporting 340B accountability as part of normal anesthesia workflow.

For Epic sites with interoperable syringe pumps in the OR (such as Alaris, Medfusion 4000, Spectrum IQ, and more), clinicians scan the pump, scan the syringe, and program the pump in just four clicks.

With the BD Intelliport™ System, RFID-enabled SLS syringe labels extend medication identity through preparation, delivery, and tracking without relying on barcode scanning.

When the case is complete, the process moves to controlled substance waste.

CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WASTE & DATA FOR RECONCILIATION

The Safe Waste System (SWS) works in conjunction with Safe Label System 550i or newer models.

SWS is an FDA Class I Exempt medical device designed for liquid controlled substance waste management.

Using SLS syringe label data via a USB connection at the point of care, SWS supports identification, measurement, spectrophotometric analysis, waste, and record/report of liquid controlled substance waste at the point of care.

A comprehensive, compliant record is captured at the point of care — supporting pharmacy review and reconciliation processes without requiring reconstruction after the case.

By replacing manual, delayed, and error-prone disposal processes, SWS provides pharmacy visibility and strengthens accountability in one of the most challenging parts of the perioperative medication workflow.

For clinicians, this means fewer manual steps and less post-case documentation.

For pharmacy, it means clear visibility into waste events and structured data for reconciliation processes — without chasing paper logs or reconstructing cases later.

At PREPARATION:
Safe Label System® (SLS)

Medication safety starts at preparation.

The Safe Label System provides visual and audible medication verification at the point of preparation and produces standardized, machine-readable, TJC-compliant syringe labels.

  • Eliminates handwritten syringe labels
  • Supports cart integration for inventory control and reduced stock outs
  • Provides electronic visual and audible safety checks during preparation
  • Helps reduce vial and ampoule swaps, syringe mislabeling, and syringe swaps

Award-winning medication safety trusted in perioperative environments worldwide.

At ADMINISTRATION:
SLS-WAVE and Intelliport

Documentation belongs at the moment of administration.

SLS-WAVE and the BD Intelliport System support medication administration by enabling safety checks and documentation within anesthesia’s existing workflow.

  • Hands-free documentation on the way to the port
  • Automatic documentation into Epic or Cerner with alerts (e.g. allergies)
  • Additional safety check (via Epic) prior to administration helps reduce syringe swaps
  • Captures the exact NDC at administration
  • Improves charge capture and 340B accuracy
  • Supports interoperable syringe pumps
  • Enables RFID-based workflows with Intelliport* (coming soon)

Administration without interruption. Documentation without delay.

CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WASTE & DATA FOR RECONCILIATION:
Safe Waste System (SWS)

(NEW | Coming Soon)

Supports the controlled substance waste stage of the perioperative medication workflow.

Safe Waste System (SWS) is an FDA Class I Exempt medical device designed to support controlled substance waste and capture the data required for reconciliation at the point of care

  • Identify, measure, assay, waste, witness and record/report
  • Designed for liquid controlled substance waste
  • Waste documented at the point of care — before the provider leaves the room — reducing delayed, manual post-case follow-up
  • Captures a comprehensive, compliant record to support pharmacy review and reconciliation processes
  • Provides pharmacy visibility through the SWS AT Data Center

Why Complementary Compliance Matters in the OR

Disconnected tools create gaps.
Complementary technologies working in conjunction help close them.

The Codonics technologies support:

  • Safety through electronic checks and standardized labeling
  • Documentation captured at the moment of care
  • Traceability across the medication workflow
  • Accountability clinicians and pharmacy can trust

All within a complementary perioperative workflow.

Built to Grow With You

Codonics medication safety technologies are designed for longevity
— so hospitals don’t have to choose between acting now and planning for what’s next.

The Safe Label System (SLS) purchased today is built to evolve as technology standards advance, with a clear upgrade path to RFID-enabled workflows as they emerge.

Hospitals can move forward with confidence knowing their investment is protected — not replaced.

The Safe Waste System (SWS) is designed as a compact drug analysis and wasting system that operates in conjunction with the Safe Label System, allowing hospitals to address controlled substance waste workflows when they’re ready — without workflow disruption.
